Why It Matters
Every slab cracks eventually. The question is whether it cracks where you planned it to or somewhere you did not, and that is decided before a single truck arrives.
Houston sits on Gulf Coast gumbo clay that swells through a wet spring and shrinks hard in an August drought. A slab poured on unprepared ground rides that movement and breaks up along the weakest line. The fix is not more concrete, it is a properly compacted base underneath, and it is the part of the job you will never see and never regret paying for.
Concrete poured in Texas summer heat loses water to the air faster than it can hydrate, and concrete that dries rather than cures ends up weaker and more prone to surface crazing. That means early starts, wet curing or a curing compound, and sometimes telling you we will pour next week rather than today. A crew that pours a driveway at two in the afternoon in July is doing you no favours.
Those grooves cut into a slab are there to decide where it cracks. Cut too shallow, spaced too far apart, or cut a day too late and the slab picks its own line instead. Getting joint depth and spacing right for the thickness of your pour is one of the cheapest things on the job and one of the most visible when it is wrong.

Shed and workshop slabs, HVAC pads, generator pads, hot tub bases and slabs for room additions. Small jobs and large ones. An equipment pad that settles takes the equipment with it, so these get the same base prep as a driveway even when they are four feet square.
Not everything needs tearing out. Sunken sections, cracked walkways, spalling surfaces and trip hazards can often be repaired or resurfaced for a fraction of replacement. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in, and when a repair is only buying you a year we say that too.

Old concrete broken out and hauled away, then the base graded and compacted. This is the step a cheap bid shortens, and it is the step that decides whether your slab is still flat in ten years.

It comes down to square footage, thickness, how much old concrete has to come out and be hauled away, reinforcement, and the finish you pick. A plain broom-finish replacement on an existing footprint is the low end. A thicker pour for a work truck, with a widening and a stamped finish, is a different job entirely. We quote line by line with thickness and reinforcement named, so you can compare like for like instead of comparing two totals.

Sunken sections, wide cracks with a lip you can catch a toe on, and spalling surfaces can frequently be repaired, resurfaced or replaced section by section. Thicker than most homeowners expect, and it depends on what parks on it. A driveway carrying only cars is a different spec from one taking a work truck, a trailer or an RV, and the reinforcement changes with it. We spec it for the heaviest thing that will actually sit on it, not the average, because that is where slabs fail.
Almost always the base or the joints rather than the concrete itself. An uncompacted base lets the slab settle unevenly, and control joints that are too shallow, too far apart or cut too late mean the slab picks its own crack line. Both are invisible once the job is finished, which is exactly why they are the first things a cheap bid cuts.
Longer than you want, and it is not negotiable. Foot traffic comes first, vehicles considerably later, and heavy vehicles later still. Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after it looks finished. Driving on a slab early is one of the few ways to permanently damage a good pour, and we will give you the actual dates rather than a vague “give it a few days.”
We can get close, rarely exact. New concrete cures lighter and darkens over years, so a patch or an added section will not match a twenty-year-old slab no matter who pours it. Where the difference would be obvious, we will tell you up front and talk through options like replacing a whole section, or a finish or colour that makes the transition deliberate rather than accidental.
Yes. An equipment pad, a set of front steps or a short walkway is a small job and we price it like one. Those get the same base prep as a driveway, because a pad that settles takes the equipment sitting on it along for the ride.
Sometimes, and it depends on where you live and what you are doing. Replacing on the existing footprint often needs nothing. Widening a driveway, altering a culvert or the approach where it meets the street, or adding a large slab frequently does, and the authority changes every few miles across this metro.
