Why It Matters
Concrete looks solid and finished. It is not sealed. A slab-on-grade foundation sits directly on ground that holds water, and moisture vapour moves up through the concrete continuously. Put the wrong floor over that and the vapour has nowhere to go.
Solid hardwood cups because the boards absorb vapour from underneath and curl. Glue-down products let go when moisture pressure builds under the adhesive. Laminate swells at the edges and the damage is permanent. The moisture test takes very little time and it tells us whether you need a barrier or a different product entirely. Anybody quoting a floor for a slab without asking about moisture is guessing with your money.
Quality flooring is one of the first things buyers notice in a Houston home, and one of the first things that fails visibly when it was installed over an untested slab. Doing it properly the first time costs a little more and saves doing it twice.

On a slab it needs an uncoupling membrane underneath, because slabs on Gulf Coast clay move seasonally and rigid tile bonded straight to moving concrete cracks along the grout lines. That membrane is not an upsell, it is why the floor still looks right in ten years.
Engineered hardwood is real wood veneer over a dimensionally stable core, which makes it far more tolerant of slab moisture than solid hardwood. This is how you get a wood floor in a Houston slab house without fighting physics. Solid hardwood belongs over a proper wood subfloor, which here mostly means older pier and beam homes.

Sometimes, and often you should not. It raises floor height at every doorway and transition, which can mean doors no longer clear and appliances no longer slide out. It also hides whatever is wrong underneath, and if existing tile is already cracking from slab movement the new floor will follow it. Yes, we move most furniture as part of the service. We recommend removing valuables, electronics and fragile items beforehand. Appliances need pulling in kitchens and laundries, and disconnecting a gas range or a water line is a job for the right trade rather than a flooring crew.
LVP is vinyl through and through, so it is fully waterproof and right for kitchens, baths and anywhere spills happen. Laminate has a wood-based core: water resistant, not waterproof, and once the core takes on moisture the damage is permanent. For Houston homes we usually recommend LVP.
